Central region car rental and hire in Portugal.
Coimbra's rich heritage of Roman
relics and its academic air contain great experiences in wines
and food, as well as great accommodation. Our Coimbra rental
office will help you get mobile so you can travel the countryside
at your own pace, and discover its charms.
Getting oriented in Portugal
Portugal is compact and that makes
it easy to get a taste of all of its parts. The North,
however, is the scenic stronghold. Along the Minho the
country is green, damp, and often startling in its ways and customs;
and the sensational gorge and valley of the Douro River, followed
along its course by the railway, off which antiquated branch lines
edge into remote Trás-os-Montes. And if it's monuments
you're after, the centre of the country, and above all, Coimbra
and Évora - retain a faded grandeur.
Enjoy Coimbra, so old and so young
Portugal's brightest youth comes
to Coimbra to the university, this gives the ancient place a delightful
buzz of youthful energy.
Coimbra University is one of the
oldest in Europe, founded in Lisbon in 1290, and then transferred
to here in 1537. The University buildings are on a hill overlooking
the city. This is a great place to visit . . . you enter the old
part of the University through an Iron Gate, inside the
gate is the enormous University Patio, with a large statute
of João III.
Beside the gate, to the left when entering,
you will see the long low palace wing. The University Library
is in the far-left corner, take the tour that is provided . .
. you'll be delighted. It is fascinating, very large and very
old.
If you're here in the end of April or beginning
of May make it a point to see the students singing Fado and
burning their ribbons at the end of the school year.
